Episode 125: Guest DJ Peter Buck: Commemorating Nikki Sudden
A special episode of Head East where Peter Buck brought in his Nikki records and talked about the late great artist and his work with the guitarist/songwriter over the years, including the several month stretch of time taking him in as his roommate in Athens. The show coincides with his birthday weekend. He would have been 68 but died at the young age of 50 in NYC, likely of a heart attack, after performing at the Knitting Factory.
We begin with Nikki's foundational punk band the Swell Maps (with his brother Epic Soundtracks), which he started at 16, and get into his beautiful but dark work with Dave Kusworth (Jacobites project) and Rowland S. Howard (of the Birthday Party), and other collaborations.
Pardons for the distracted miscues here and there in the set! We got to talking a lot in the studio and missed some DJ basics. Flaws and all... Enjoy.
