Beautiful Music Program 41 - 19th Amendment Anniversary Show With Guest Mix By Cuica
For today's episode of Beautiful
Music, I’m honored to be hosting a guest-mix from the talented selector
extraordinaire Cuica, as part of XRAY's celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment (there is a
live streaming virtual house show starting at 6, more info can be found on our home page).
Here’s her intro to the mix:
“Here
is a small sample of really interesting and inspiring songs from all
over the world, written or made awesome by women. We start with the
High Priestess of Soul, the incomparable Nina Simone in a song that
stands out as possibly the most direct cry for freedom. It is the most
famous song I chose, but I couldn’t think of a more appropriate song for
today. I leaned into mostly optimistic summertime songs because I am in
the mode of levity and hope and dance. These songs are from Brazil,
Turkey, Iraq, Chile, Japan, England, India, Ireland, Senegal, Israel,
Nigeria and Dayton, Ohio. I hope you enjoy this brief trip through a few
decades and a few different musical genres. Stay safe out there!”
And some more info about Karen:
Karen
Antunes aka Cuica or sometimes DJ Cuica is a classic record nerd. She's
worked in record stores for decades, exploring music from her homeland
of Brazil and following those roots to West Africa and back again.
Beyond her cultural tradition, Cuica digs deep across genres,
incorporating soul, Turkish psych, Ye-Ye, ambient music, cumbias, and
other global sounds into her multi-genre sets. She hosts regular DJ
nights in Portland and tours in Europe and Brazil. She is one of the
pillars of local record shop and label Mississippi Records, and holds
the motto of "Love Over Gold" as a moral compass in her own life. She
releases projects on Mississippi Records, Sahel Sounds,
and runs the imprint Songs From Home with her partner Christopher
Kirkley. Heavily invested in the future of women in music, she worked
with Rock n Roll Camp for Girls, setting up a music camp in Bahrain.
When Cuica is not behind the counter at the shop, she is usually with
her two babies at home or working on mixtapes.
