The First Case of the South African Jazz Jive Holiday (v15)
Listeners, this is one of my favorite traditions of the big show...
Every year I like to play content for the holidays that is off my beaten paths. My radio holiday season is bracketed by 2 shows dedicated to South Africa (one for Thanksgiving, the second for Christmas).
My focus is on music that bridges two popular South African styles: Township Jive and Jazz.
I particularly enjoy this music at the holidays, because all the songs in these sets were made during the Apartheid era in South Africa. In spite of all the hardship and strife surrounding blacks in South Africa during this period, they still created some of the most timeless and joyful music in the world.
