The First Case of the West African Pop Parade
Last week we did Afro-Latin (mostly) from West African countries not named Ghana, Congo, or Nigeria.
This week we are staying on the theme of West African music that avoids the 3 early powerhouses of the 60s music scene, focusing instead on nascent pop sounds from countries that were just beginning to create studio-recorded music in the late 60s. Today's play list features bands from Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Senegal.
I'm staying away from direct Afro-Latin influences today, focusing instead on some of the other musical traditions that enjoyed popularity in the 60s, 70s, and early 80s. Special attention today for various indigenous folk music sounds that have been given a modern makeover, as well as some lounge-tastic African takes on French "chanson" and other balladeer fare.
