The Second Case of the Congolese Creation
Listeners: this week we revisit one of our favorite African destinations, the Congo.
Many experts would name the Congo as the most important and influential nation in the history of sub-Saharan African music. Among only a few countries that offered studio recording facilities before the 1960s, the Congo stands out from even this crowd for encouraging and recording the most African influenced music in that early era. Whereas recorded output from South Africa, Ghana, and Nigeria (all associated with English colonial influence) focused almost exclusively on Western-style jazz knock-offs during the 1950s and earlier, the Congo was already developing a distinctively Africanized take on Latin dance rhythms from Cuba.
Once again the Adventures will devote a full 2 hours to exploring the arc of Congolese music, beginning with early Afro-Latin experimentation in the 50s, moving through the full flowering of Congolese Rumba in the 60s, and on into early Soukouss sounds from the 70s.
