The Case of the Brazilian Symphony

Today's set is a compilation of unusual sounds from Brazil. Much of the content in today's set is genre-defying... as if Brazilian elements of samba, forro, and bossa nova have been thrown in a blender with jazz and folk to produce melting pot music of Brazil. Like Copland's America, today's set is a pastiche of indigenous forms woven together into a musical tapestry. The sum of the parts yields an expression of national character.

Musical elements come together today in a symphony-like collection of compositions organized into movements. 

Set begins with a nod to the musical forms of Bahia and Northeastern Brazil. Particular attention here to the jazz-folk fusion of show favorites Quinteto Violado.

Next movement covers the psychedelic era in Brazil. Contributions here from Tom Ze and Mutantes. This set moves into rootsy and primitive territory, including the jazz vocals of Milton Nascimento.

The end of today's set moves into some 70s funk and lounge madness before wrapping up with a pair of earnest acoustic ballads.
