Respected LadyLand- 2 Detroit Producers: Johnnie Mae Matthews / Lorraine Chandler

When people talk about Detroit soul music, their conversations inevitably land at Motown Records. However, the pot of musical talent in 1960s Detroit was brimming, spilling over into label after label, side-projects and subscenes, etc. I suppose it's our tendency to boil down history into simplified, easier to digest bite-sized facts. But that leaves so many people out of the story, particularly women.  

This episode spotlights some of the musical contributions of two women based in Detroit, both were performers who also worked extensively behind the scenes, lifting up other performers, guiding careers, writing songs, and producing great records!
