The Seventh Case of the Latin Fiesta

<< Tropicology

This week returns to a familiar Latin theme:  golden oldies from Cuba, Afro-Peruvian, and Latin rare groove from the 60s and 70s.

Today's Cuba set digs even deeper into the past, featuring at least one track from the late 1930s, along with some traditional ballads and "danzon" roots of Cuban son. I mean, we're talking Miami Beach old folks home radio here, people. Wonderful dusty grooves, mastered to modern vinyl pressings in the past 50 years from scratchy acetates cut before the era of master tape recording in Cuba.

As the set progresses we'll hear more nuggets from the Afro-Peruvian scene of the 60s and 70s. This music is a typical expression of black pride in that universal era of advancement, but with a surprisingly traditional sound at a time when most musicians worldwide were embracing electric instruments and studio effects.

This Cuba/Peru set ends in the typical fashion:  modern rare grooves from the 60s and 70s. This time I am mixing up sounds from Cuba, Colombia, and "Nueva Yorica" for a salsa-era set with real punch.
