<< Mating Calls
Today on Mating Calls, we honor the legacy of MLK and the ongoing movement for civil rights by incorporating elements of the progressive rock radio genre that has its roots in the politically tumultuous year of 1968. Also the year that Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, we start out the two-hour set with Nina Simone’s “Mississippi Goddam,” recorded live just days after King’s death. The set then progresses through jazz, soul, psychedelic, classic rock, folk, and country to give our listeners a sense of the political themes and musical textures of the time.
Everything you hear on today’s show is from 1968, so grab your protest gear and flower power accessories as you prepare to be transported through time and space.
