Episode 5: Fields
The theme of today’s show is “Fields,” a reference this week to summertime in the country. This is a bit of a bookend to last week’s “Hot Streets” theme dedicated to summer in the city… today we will hear a soundtrack for the hot months in the rural areas. But make no mistake, listeners; this is not music for independence day parades and visits to swimming holes… in the countryside, summer is a time of work. If you live in a rural area in Africa, Cuba, or Latin America, it is likely that you will have full days of work in the fields, from sunup to sundown. The harvest must come in before the rains, and it will be hot.
So today we will hear music on the theme of labor under a hot summer sun. This is music expressing the fury of heat and the epic struggle of humans to work in it.
