The Case of the Unexpected Brazilian
Brasileiros, I know your World Cup loss has left a black eye on your soul.
This week we put a cold steak on that eye with a tasty slab of unexpected music from Brazil, past and present. This week combines weird folk, experimental rock, and many quirky modern interpretations of classic tunes from the Brazilian songbook.
The first hour this week finds a mix of the unexpected and the unusual from the Brazil scene of the 1970s. We will hear later career solo guitar work from the big band era singer Dorival Caymmi. We will hear again the free-form Nordestino sounds of Quinteto Violado. And, of course, we are pulling plenty of Tom Ze from the vaults for this show.
The second hour this week features a full set of songs from the outstanding 2011 various artists release "Red Hot & Rio 2." (For anyone who doesn't know, the "Red Hot &" franchise has been pulling together artists from a wide range of genres for album projects to benefit AIDS research.) This sprawling 3-LP set features a dozen gems sprinkled through an uneven field. I will remix the gems for maximized listening pleasure and continuity.
