Night School #200: Paul Knauls, Sr.

<< Night School

Tonight on Night School we celebrate 200 episodes!

My guest is the honorary Mayor of Albina, Mr. Paul Knauls, Sr. This man has served the community since 1963. His elegant, trademark style defies convention. Among his many accolades, Paul ran the Cotton Club throughout the 1960s in Portland. Known as “the only place on the West Coast w/ wall-to-wall soul,” this was a destination on the Chitlin Circuit hosting the likes of Etta James, Sammy Davis, Jr. & Big Mama Thornton. Some describe the venue as a modern vaudevillian showcase in the black community. It is said that there were dancers, contortionists, comics, impersonators & more. A legendary cast of local musicians got their start at the Cotton Club. We’ll have special guest, Renn Woods of Sunday’s Child, on the program this evening to speak to that.

A major thanks to XRAY, the volunteers & musicians who’ve graced our studio these past few years! Please tune in & support community radio.
