<< Night School

Back in Fall, I shared a story about how this long forgotten PDX disco band came to be. Tonight on Night School, I am joined by members of Lovin’ From The Oven, Greg Warner & Larry Krall. We’ll be listening back to tracks from this 1977 recording at the Turquoise Room. This set of reel-to-reels represents the earliest recorded output from Linda Hornbuckle, a dearly departed legend in our community. Many thanks to Dave Fulton for audio restoration support. Tonight we recognize Lovin’ From The Oven.

Full Story from last Fall is here:

"Happy Birthday, Linda Hornbuckle! In an effort to uphold Ms. Hornbuckle’s legacy, I’ve been working on an archival project tracing her early work in PDX.

Depicted here is a 1977 recording of jazz-funk ensemble, “Lovin’ From The Oven.” This 1/2” tape represents the first secular recording featuring Ms. Hornbuckle and quite possibly her first recorded output period.

The story of her involvement w/ the group is uncanny. As a teen, she saw an ad in the paper: a local band of jazz musicians sought a singer for their weekend gig at the Turquoise Room, a mid-size venue on Barbur Blvd. Up until this time she had sang solely in her father’s church. Going out on a limb, she attended the tryout and, being the remarkable singer she was, landed the gig.

This created a slight problem as it was not entirely clear whether or not her father would approve of her new interest singing outside of the church. In order to join Lovin’ From The Oven she felt she had to sneak out of the house for gigs - many of which went late into the night, past 4am. This method may have worked, however, singing in church involves an early rise. After a couple months of this, her father eventually caught on.

Understandably disappointed, her father requested one thing: that this “Lovin’ From The Oven” outfit show him exactly what they were all about. After church the following Sunday afternoon, the band was asked to set up their equipment at the Turquoise Room and perform for Linda’s father with the lights up. This they did. After an hourlong set, he had seen enough.

Lovin’ From The Oven would go on to establish themselves as the house band at the T-Room for many years to come. Linda Hornbuckle would become a leading voice in the NW gospel, funk & blues scene. To say that her influence is still felt to this day is an understatement. Her music & spirit is everywhere.

This story comes from Larry Krall, the band’s keyboardist. Thanks to Greg Warner for locating the reel. Restoration of the recording began this week w/ Dave Fulton. We will be mixing soon...stay tuned."
