Great show- DJ bones mentioned there really wasn’t “death metal” when he was a “tyke”...I’m curious what he thinks the first real death metal took shape: I always trace it back to “Seven Churches” by Possessed (1984?85?) which even inludes a song called “death metal” or things like Bathory (let’s not forget “eh-bleh,” Joey). Kreator, destruction, sodom,death was all in the mid-80s. To me this could all be thought of as “death metal” although I’m guessing “speed metal” or “thrash metal” maybe thought of as more appropriate. Is it your contention that death metal really began to take shape in the early 90s (obituary, cannibal corps) when some of the more common attributes were developed? Blast beats and so on. Hope you’re both doing great- the show is awesome.
