Night School #166: Bruce Smith (Pleasure)
Tonight on XRAY: Night School x Liquid Beat
We have an extended broadcast featuring Pleasure’s Bruce Smith and modern funk producer, Buscrates. Both bring new music.
Bruce Smith joins us in lieu of his first solo record, Doc Brucade’s “Universal Music Radio.” Known locally for his work as a percussionist and dance instructor, Bruce was a pivotal force in Pleasure’s rise. In the late 60s, he fronted The Soul Masters - a predecessor to Pleasure. The earliest performances of the group took place within a mere two blocks from XRAY’s studio. Throughout the episode, we’ll hear songs from the new record and a few tales from the crypt.
Hailing from Pittsburgh, Orlando Marshall (aka Buscrates) joins with a rare West Coast dj set. Having produced for a range of labels, Buscrates’ sound is one that many may recognize. Self-described as the “keeper of the funk, deleter of the junk,” Buscrates draws from a range of time-tested influences from Kashif to Dilla. You might know him for his work with East Liberty Quarters. You’ll remember him after this evening.
