The Return Case of the Senegal Soundtrack

Today's show is a return engagement for some music I played on this show years ago: all music today from Senegal (along with The Gambia, a tiny country surrounded on all sides by Senegal).

This music has a special status with me: it is the music that first really pulled me past the surface of the African music scene, spurring me to research, and starting my efforts to hunt down vintage African vinyl. This is music from the late 70s and early 80s, a time when the Senegalese music scene was a wonderful melting pot of influences:  latin music (especially from Cuba), psychedelic rock, and indigenous drumming. 

Pride of place in today's second hour for music by Senegal's most famous musical export, Orchestre Baobab. It was the "Pirate's Choice" reissue on the Stern's label that first ignited my interest in Senegalese music.
