Night School #150: Sweater Funk DJs
Tonight marks Episode #150 of Night School.
I started this project as a blog roughly five years ago. When XRAY went live, I tightened my focus to bring “the finest in modern soul, boogie & outsider funk” to PDX each Friday at 6pm on 107.1fm. The show has since been a platform for bands, OG funk artists & touring djs throughout the country - from Miami to Brooklyn, Chicago to LA, Seattle & beyond. I’ve had the opportunity to interview my idols on this show. Lately, the platform has allowed me to connect more deeply w/ elders in the PDX soul, funk, jazz & gospel community.
It’s my honor tonight to host the Sweater Funk DJs out of San Francisco. Throughout the past decade, this 10+ member crew has thrown down all manner of boogie cuts at their weekly residence in the Bay. Along w/ Dam-Funk’s Funkmosphere crew in LA, Sweater Funk is largely responsible for the resurgence in 70s/80s funk & steppers. If you’ve ever purchased a rare boogie record for over $50, it’s likely due to these ladies and gents having popularized it.
