<< The Future Of What

How does a song make it into a movie, TV show, video game or advertisement? There’s more to it than just picking a popular song. Sync licensing is the process by which a song is used, or synced, to a moving image and can be a lucrative source of revenue for an artist. On this episode, Portia talks with Matt FX, the music supervisor behind Broad City’s genre-spanning soundtrack, about what it’s like to secure music for television. Justin Ringle of the band Horse Feathers also talks about his recent tours and the series of sync/placements that he had with the California Dairy Board. Then, Carianne Marshall of SONGS Music Publishing explains the importance of sync licenses to an artists' career. Sohrab Nafici (Director, Music/legal at Warner Bros.) caps the episode off with his insight into the historical and current trends within the sync business.
