The Fourth Case of the African Funk Farm

This week we return to a proven crowd-pleaser theme:  this will be the fourth case of the African Funk Farm.

I admit to feeling a bit sheepish every time I hit this theme; it's because, of all my theme buckets, this one tends to feature the most material from reissues and compilations. My show today is all material from recent reissues and compilations!

It's not surprising to see so much reissued African funk... of all music from Africa, funk is among the most heavily influenced by American sounds, and it is highly approachable for gringo audiences. (And since African funk is reissued so frequently, I can chase expensive originals in less exposed genres!)

Good reissues of African funk come out with some frequency, and it is part of the mission statement of my show to keep my listeners informed about good new reissues on the market. There has been a nice run of reissues over the past few months; this is a good time to get you all caught up!

I kick off the show with a dose of Ghana highlife, hitting a rocksteady kinda vibe. We'll hear some hard edged urban soul before we spill over into some stretched out psychedelic funk classics. The second hour today moves the psychedelic groove into a disco dancehall, and we sail out on a cloud of dancefloor RnB boogie. Represented countries on today's show:  Ivory Coast, Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, and Togo. Reissue labels are:  PMG, Oriki Music, Soul Jazz Records, Hot Casa Records, and Strut Records.
