The Second Case of the African Soft Parade

<< Tropicology

I've done a case of "African Soft Parade" once before on the show, that time aimed at folksy sounds from the grasslands area on the southern fringes of the Sahara; music from the Sahel:  northern Mali, Niger, Senegal...

This week I begin with folksy sounds from the forest areas of central Africa, particularly The Congo, followed by some mellow soukouss from The Congo. For once I will be playing a mostly Congo set without any coverage for Congolese Rumba, the first breakthrough genre from this area. Today's objective is relaxation... it's a mostly Congo mixtape for waking up slowly on a rainy Portland Sunday.

We begin with some field recordings of amateur musicians in the Congo; one or two guitars and voices joined by percussion played on a glass bottle. As the first hour progresses, we will hear how these simple forms of popular music were adapted and modernized for popular recordings in the 60s and 70s.

The second hour today focuses on mellow soukouss sounds from the Congolese scene of the 70s. The musicians on these tracks spent the previous decade honing their skills in the hotbed of the Congolese Rumba scene... you can hear the musical sophistication and studio mastery on display from these seasoned artists.
