The Second Case of the African Funk Farm
Perhaps I am inspired this week by seeing Nigerian musicologist Uchenna Ikonne speak at the Hollywood Theater... it seems like a good time to drop another dose of African funk.
It so happens that 2016 so far has seen a pretty huge number of quality reissues and compilations for vintage African funk. This show will sample a few newly released LPs that are making me smile these days: "Wake Up You: The Rise and Fall of Nigerian Rock Vol. 2" (Now-Again Records); "Space Echo: The Mystery Behind the Cosmic Sound of Cabo Verde Finally Revealed" (Analog Africa); "Wede Harer Guzo" by Hailu Mergia & Dahlak Band (Awesome Tapes from Africa); "Nation Building" by Berkely Ike Jones (one of a number of quality reissues this year from Austrian label PMG); "Pat Thomas Introduces Marijata" (Voodoo Funk).
I'll be mixing up cuts from these new plates alongside some of my older stock of funky African sounds of Nigeria and Benin. Music also from Cape Verde, Ghana, and Ethiopia. Everybody loves funk... this is funky Africa.
