The First Case of the African Rock Rebellion
This week's episode has been built around 4 quality compilations and reissues that have been released in the past 3 months. I wanna share.
These albums all fall on the psychedelic rock spectrum in African music, from twisted latin to organ-driven soul shakedowns. As always, above it lies the sublime electric guitar work of African masters.
We jump right in to some "jerk" style rock-and-jazz scorchers. The first set follows that sound down a rabbit hole as we delve into deeper and more psychedelic sounds through the hour.
Second set today plants a foot into the camp of Afrobeat, the 4-on-the-floor drumkit revolution in African music that was initiated by Nigeria's Fela Kuti. We will see that rhythmic innovation at play with sounds that move among mellow, moody, and fierce.
