The First Case of the African Voodoo Funk

12:00pm, 4-10-2016
<< Tropicology

I will always be grateful to my most frequent DJ stand-in Tex Clark for one terrific anecdote related to the West African country of Benin. She knows some folks in Portland who come from Burkina Faso, which borders Benin. According to these folks, Benin is "where the voodoo lives."

It may be my overactive gringo imagination, but I do feel I can hear a voodoo vibe in the music of Benin. Today, for the first time on the big show, we will focus on African tunes with that voodoo vibe... mostly from Benin, but also featuring songs from neighboring countries such as Nigeria and Burkina Faso. Everything on today's show from the 70s and very early 80s.

This will be deep... deeep... deeeeep.
