Joe Meek: Pop Alchemist

Legendary English record-producer and songwriter Joe Meek is best remembered for his 1962 hit, Telstar by the Tornadoes. He was responsible for nearly 250 singles, 45 of which charted top 50.

What lots of folks don't know is that he pioneered experimental pop, couldn't play a single musical instrument and led an extraordinary life. He was an extremely volatile character who was persecuted and even jailed for being gay. He famously suffered from crippling paranoia and depression and he was convinced he could communicate with the dead. Meek even set up tape machines in graveyards to record voices from the beyond. He obsessed over Buddy Holly and was committed to communing with his spirit, claiming to have actually done so in his dreams.

In 1967, armed with a shotgun, Joe Meek tragically took his own life and that of his landlord's for reasons unknown. He was 37 and left behind a lasting legacy of sound production and recording, rivaling Phil Spector. British music magazine, NME ranked Meek as the greatest record producer of all time.

Let's see if we can conjure up Meek's troubled spirit on today's episode of SAVAGE BEAT.
